Sri Lanka is one of Asia’s most loved surfing destinations — not just for its beautiful waves, but because you can surf here almost all year. Thanks to the island’s unique weather pattern, Sri Lanka offers two separate surf seasons, one on each coast. So whether you're a complete beginner dreaming of your first wave, or an intermediate surfer looking for long, clean rides, Sri Lanka has the perfect spot waiting for you.
The magic of surfing in Sri Lanka comes from its warm waters, friendly surf towns, gentle learning waves, and its beautiful beaches lined with coconut palms. Surfers fall in love with the island because the atmosphere is relaxed, local surf culture is growing, and the water stays at a comfortable 26–29°C all year.
What is the best time for surfing in Sri Lanka?
The South Coast surf season (Weligama, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa) runs from December to March. The East Coast surf season (Arugam Bay, Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm) runs from May to September. Sri Lanka offers waves year-round because the monsoons switch between coasts.
Most countries have one main surf season, but Sri Lanka is different. Our two monsoons hit opposite sides of the island at different times, which means when one coastline is rough, the other coastline becomes calm, sunny, and perfect for surfing.
This creates an amazing surfing advantage:
You can find good waves in Sri Lanka every month of the year.
If you're visiting Sri Lanka between December and March, the South Coast is where the surf magic happens. The towns along this coastline come alive with surfers, travelers, beach cafés, and warm tropical energy.
